I don't even know how long ago it was when I went to Usery Mountain Shooting Range for the time. It must have been over 30 years ago. I wanted to go shooting today so I looked up the range on the Net to check hours etc., since it had been a while since I had been there. I found this site and noticed the comments by 'Anonymous'from Dec. of '07. I was taken aback to say the least since I had never experienced any of the things he/she referred to.

Today I spent about three hours at Usery and was even more impressed than I had been in the past. I found the range personnel to be helpful and informative and ever vigilant for any violation of range safety rules. As I was leaving a young couple arrived and one of the range employees walked over to the table to give them 'a quick overview' of the range and its rules.

There was no indication of any looking the other way and the staff certainly didn't appear at all frightened; on the contrary staff were consistantly walking up and down the range observing shooters and their gun handling. When the range master called for a cease fire there was no room for discussion; you stopped now. In fact, a one minute warning was given prior to the actual cease fire and from that point forward you could take one final shot and then use the remaining time to clear your weapon and step away from your shooting table. Anyone doing anything that would compromise the range rules to the slightest degree were confronted immediately. This was the most well organized and supervised shooting excursion I have experienced in many years. This level of professionalism even surpasses what I have experienced during past visits to the Usery facility.

I am sure things get busier on the weekends and may be more hectic but I can not see how the level of supervision could deteriorate to the point that 'Anonymous' depicts. Oh, one final comment; I didn't witness anyone 'lying on the ground' but then I don't know why anyone would expect them to be asked to leave if it did occur. It's known as the 'prone position' and is used by many long range shooters to steady their aim. Hardly anything that should concern anyone as long as safe gun handling practices are observed, as I'm sure they would be under the watchful eye of Usery staff.

I always go to the range with my husband and quite often we take a friend also. I do not always shoot but I am still there with them. Anonymous must have been hallucinating because in all the times I have been there, there has never been a problem. The last time I was there I even took some beautiful photographs. Shooting from a prone position is allowed and can be part of training. The staff there are well trained and would not condone behavior not appropriate for a shooting range. I would be curious to know who taught anonymous how to shoot and the proper way of gun use. Our son is a senior Federal Firearms Instructor and has been to Usery with us over the years. He has never, ever said anything but complimentary statements about the staff and the positive and correct way that they ensure the safety of all who are utilizing the range. They DO NOT allow anyone no matter who they are intimidate them or try to cause them to compromise the safety of the range.

Those who choose to treat guns with respect will learn the correct way to handle them. Those who choose not to will always find something to complain about.

This is a well run, safe shooting range with a very competant, safety oriented crew. I come here 2-3 times a month, sometimes with my wife and have never had any trouble or worries. I have never seen any "gang-bangers", mostly family oriented. If I make a mistake the staff is quick to point it out, keeping the range safe.

I have been to Usery Mountain Shooting Range many times and each time it was a disasters. Most of the people that go there need to go to a handgun class because they think it's a time to fool around and the staff looks the other way because most of the staff seems scared. Also If you look like a gang banger and act like one they should be escorted off the premises. Each time I have been there people are rude and obnoxious and if one of your brass cases hits them they are ready to shoot you. I had to leave several times because people were lying on the ground acting like it was war games and the staff was to scared to tell them to get up instead I was the one asked to change my table.

Usery Mountain Shooting Range is one of the last places to shoot outside and I really would like to see it cleaned up and the staff take a better interest in it. People will be willing to pay more for the use of a better more friendlier place to shoot.

Thank You

My friends and I were in the area fighting fire when we were given some time off. We decided to go to the Usery club today and shoot some clays. We were very disappointed!!!! They don't rent guns or have any to use. The staff was very short we us and the range master on the sporting clay range was very rude. We refused to shoot here. Skip this place!

I have been to the range many times. I have brought my friends and even my 13 year old son. Never once did I ever see a gang banger looking person and have seen shooters shooting from various positions. Each shooter was following good gun safety rules. The Range Master even showed my son how to clear my XD safely and guarantee an empty safe gun. My son was impressed with the way it was run, I am impressed with the way it is run. It does not cost much to use the range and they will allow you to "challify" for different ranges there as well.

I go to this range often and have brought my grandsons to get them started in the sport. I agree that often there are adults who need a lot more training before they should be left unattended. The range masters are some of the best I've seen. They provide a constant watch and keep the range safe at all times. It is a great facility and I am gratefull to have the oportunity to use it. Thanks to all of the staff that makes it possible!!

This range description needs to be updated to include the five stand, sporting clays and trap. I went last weekend to find that trap is only available on weekdays. So call first to find out what if your discipline will be available. I went with a friend and shot sporting clays. I accidently bought 20 gauge and tried to buy some ammo at the gun smith there, but they were out of ammo like everyone else. A nice woman who was helping run a "dove" trap shoot allowed me to trade for some 12 Gauge and really saved my day. Of course you can't expect that sort of thing, but everyone I talked to was very friendly. The sporting clays range was simple, but well executed. I've shot harder ranges, but the presentations were well thought out and verrry fun. They use computerized cards to activate the traps and I've been told they have a delay function so you can pull for yourself if needed. They had complimentary cold water in coolers at every third station or so and man on a hot AZ summer day what a pleasure it is to slam an ice cold pint of water or eight. I have no idea what the heck anonymous is talking about. I generally don't like any pistol or rifle range, because the range masters have to run a tight ship due to safety concerns and I always feel stressed like I might do something wrong and get yelled at. I haven't ever felt like the guys here ever did anything unsafe or feel like they weren't doing a good safe job. I don't like that I can't put out my iron targets for .22, but ranges have the right to make rules and I understand why they might have a problem with iron targets.

I go to this range quite often. The range staff are excellent. The range masters run a safe tight ship. The breaks between live fire and safe time run on a good schedule. This allows shooters to move safely on the range to set targets out to 300 yards. The firearm movement between the range and vehicles is safe and coordinated.

The range staff are well educated in firearms and range safety. They provide knowledgeable help with rifles and pistols if needed. They are courteous and very helpful with newcomers and old farts, like me.

The range has great facilities, restrooms, water and an excellent gunsmith on site.

An individual can shoot rifle, pistol, shotgun etc in a clean , safe environment. What more can you ask for. Membership is very reasonable and the daily rates for visitors are affordable. I have been a member at the Scottsdale gun club which is considered the best in Arizona. I consider the Rio Salado Sportsman Club outdoor range the best in Arizona.
